Tongkat Ali vs maca vs ginseng: where each root comes from, how it is traditionally prepared, what human research covers, taste, and why Tongkat Ali is nicknamed Malaysian ginseng.

Tongkat Ali vs maca vs ginseng: They are three unrelated roots from three continents. Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a bitter tree root brewed as tea in Southeast Asia; maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a malty vegetable root from the Andes eaten as powder; Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng) is an earthy root from Korea and China. Tongkat Ali is nicknamed "Malaysian ginseng," but it is not a ginseng.

Why Tongkat Ali Is Called “Malaysian Ginseng”

The nickname is cultural shorthand: in Malaysia, Tongkat Ali holds the place ginseng holds in Korea — the well-known tonic root, given as a gift and simmered at home. Botanically they are unrelated, and they do not share active compounds. If a label says “Malaysian ginseng,” check that the ingredient is Eurycoma longifolia.

What Human Studies Say

  • Tongkat Ali. A 2022 systematic review of extract trials reported possible improvement in total testosterone in men and called for more research (PubMed 36013514).
  • Maca. A systematic review found four randomized trials and concluded there was only limited evidence for improving sexual function (PubMed 20691074).
  • Asian ginseng. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says research is limited: possibly a small effect on general fatigue, inconclusive results for blood sugar, and no improvement in athletic performance in most studies. Insomnia is its most common side effect.

In all three cases the trials used specific preparations. Results for an extract capsule do not transfer automatically to a tea you brew at home — see root slices vs extract.

How People Actually Use Them

Maca is a food: a spoonful of powder in a smoothie or porridge. Ginseng is taken as sliced root, tea, or extract. Tongkat Ali is traditionally a decoction — a few slices simmered 15–30 minutes into an amber tea, rebrewed while flavour remains. Our brewing guide covers boiling, cold soak and batch methods.

Choosing Between Them

Pick on format and taste first, because that decides whether you will keep the habit: a malty food powder, an earthy ginseng tea, or a bitter-woody root tea with a sweet finish. If you are dealing with fatigue, low mood or sexual symptoms, see a doctor — these roots are traditional foods and supplements, not treatments.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tongkat Ali a type of ginseng?

No. Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is sometimes nicknamed “Malaysian ginseng” because it is a prized tonic root, but it is botanically unrelated to true ginseng (Panax ginseng) and contains different compounds.

What is the difference between Tongkat Ali and maca?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a turnip-like vegetable root from the Peruvian Andes, eaten as a food powder with a malty taste. Tongkat Ali is a woody tree root from Southeast Asia, simmered into a bitter tea. Their human research covers different outcomes, and neither replaces medical care.

Which is better for libido: Tongkat Ali, maca or ginseng?

There is no reliable head-to-head trial. A systematic review of maca found only limited evidence from four small trials; Tongkat Ali extract trials are small and short-term; and Asian ginseng research is mixed. None is a proven treatment for sexual dysfunction.

Do they taste different?

Yes. Maca is malty and slightly sweet, usually blended into food. Ginseng is earthy and bittersweet. Tongkat Ali tea is woody and bitter with a gentle sweet finish — Red Tongkat Ali is often preferred by people who want a milder cup.

Can I drink Tongkat Ali tea every day like ginseng tea?

In Malaysia it is traditionally brewed as an everyday tonic, commonly 2–3 slices simmered in 500 ml–1 L of water. That is a food habit rather than a medically validated dose, and long-term safety data are limited. Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding and ask your doctor if you take medicines.
