Tongkat Ali Coffee: What It Is and How to Make It With Real Root

Tongkat Ali coffee (Kopi Tongkat Ali) explained: what is in instant sachets, FDA warnings about tainted 'men's coffees', and how to make your own with real root slices.

nswer">What is Tongkat Ali coffee? It is coffee blended with Tongkat Ali — in Malaysia, “Kopi Tongkat Ali” is usually an instant sachet of coffee, sugar, creamer and a little Tongkat Ali extract. You can make a simpler version at home: simmer 2–3 root slices for 15–30 minutes, strain, and use that tea as the water for your coffee.

A Word of Caution About “Men’s Coffee”

Kopi Tongkat Ali is a normal supermarket product in Malaysia and Singapore. But the category has a shadow side: the US FDA has published warnings about certain imported “natural herbs” coffees marketed for male performance that contained undeclared drug ingredients (FDA example). Hidden drugs can interact dangerously with heart and blood-pressure medicines.

Sensible rules: buy from sellers who list every ingredient, be suspicious of any coffee promising fast or dramatic effects, and remember that a herbal name on the box does not make a product herbal.

How to Make Tongkat Ali Coffee With Real Root

You need: 2–3 dried Tongkat Ali root slices, 500 ml water, your usual coffee.

  1. Simmer the root. Bring slices and water to a boil, then simmer gently for 15–30 minutes.
  2. Strain. You now have an amber, woody, bitter tea.
  3. Make coffee with it. Pour the hot tea over instant coffee, or use it in place of water in a pour-over or French press.
  4. Adjust. Too bitter? Use half tea, half hot water. Add milk, honey or sugar as you normally would.

Batch tip: simmer 8–10 slices in 3–4 litres, cool, and refrigerate; reheat what you need each morning. The slices can be simmered again while colour and flavour remain. More methods are in the brewing guide.

How Does It Taste?

Coffee and Tongkat Ali are both bitter, so the root adds a woody, herbal depth rather than a new flavour. Red Tongkat Ali is the milder option; see what Tongkat Ali tea tastes like.

What It Does — and Doesn’t — Do

The lift you feel from a cup is caffeine. Research on Tongkat Ali has mostly used standardized extracts, and those findings do not establish an effect for a sachet or a home brew (root vs extract). Enjoy it as a traditional-style drink, keep an eye on caffeine and sugar, and skip it if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have been told to limit caffeine.

Frequently asked questions

What is Tongkat Ali coffee?

Tongkat Ali coffee, known in Malaysia as Kopi Tongkat Ali, is coffee blended with Tongkat Ali — usually an instant sachet containing coffee, sugar, creamer and a small amount of Tongkat Ali extract. You can also make it at home by adding brewed root tea to coffee.

How much Tongkat Ali is in instant Tongkat Ali coffee?

It varies and is often not clearly stated. Many 3-in-1 sachets are mostly sugar and creamer with a small amount of extract, so read the ingredient list and nutrition panel.

Is Tongkat Ali coffee safe?

Reputable products are ordinary sweetened coffee with a herbal ingredient, but the US FDA has warned about some imported ‘herbal’ or ‘men’s’ coffees that secretly contained prescription-type drugs. Avoid products that promise instant or drug-like effects, and count the caffeine and sugar.

How do you make Tongkat Ali coffee at home?

Simmer 2–3 Tongkat Ali root slices in about 500 ml of water for 15–30 minutes, strain, and use that hot tea instead of plain water to make your coffee. Start with half tea and half water if you find it too bitter.

Does Tongkat Ali coffee boost energy?

Coffee’s caffeine is a well-known stimulant. An energy benefit from the Tongkat Ali itself has not been established for instant sachets or home-brewed root tea.

Can I drink Tongkat Ali coffee every day?

Treat it like coffee: mind your total caffeine and sugar. Tongkat Ali is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and you should ask a doctor first if you have a medical condition or take prescription medicines.
